Docklands welcomes British sailor Pip Hare
The Docklands boating community has thrown its arms around internationally acclaimed British Sailor Pip Hare, who departed Victoria Harbour on January 14 after staying in the precinct since late December.
Ms Hare and her yacht Medallia had been competing in the 2024 Vendée Globe race, a non-stop solo circumnavigation of the world, which began on November 10 in western France.
However, her yacht’s mast broke more than 800 nautical miles from Melbourne in the Southern Ocean on December 16, forcing her to create what is known as a “jury-rig arrangement” from what components she could salvage.
She eventually arrived at Melbourne City Marina in Docklands nearly two weeks later with the help of Melbourne’s boating community, to which she has expressed her sincere gratitude.
At an event on January 9 at the Melbourne City Marina Lounge hosted by Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), Pip shared her experience and participated in a Q&A with the audience.
All proceeds from tickets to the event, as well as a guided tour of the Medallia which was hosted on January 12, were donated to Pip, who the ORCV has described as “a true inspiration for any sailor”.
