Southern Cross symphony

It’s normally filled with the sounds of trains departing, delayed service announcements and the “beep, beep” of Mykis, but last month the sound of classical music engulfed Southern Cross Station.

More than 40 musicians from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) performed at the station on October 21 in celebration of the opening of the orchestra’s 2014 season.

Members of the public were invited to take hold of the conducting baton and conduct the orchestra, who performed an excerpt from Beethoven’s Symphony No.7.

Conductors ranged from 5-year-olds and teenagers, to mothers and businessmen.

The MSO’s associate conductor Ben Northey also joined in, showing the novice conductors how it’s done.
