Sailing for harmony
29th March, 2011
Docklands Yacht Club hosted a multicultural Try Sailing Day on Victoria Harbour on March 20.
A joint venture between the Western Bulldogs, Docklands Yacht Club and sponsored by the Victorian
Multicultural Commission saw more than 70 people attend.
The weather conditions were perfect for novice sailors.
The group was aged from eight to more than 60 and came from many cultures including Burma, Liberia, Ethiopia, China, Indonesia and Australia.
Most were from refugee backgrounds and have been in Australia less than five years.
“The community spirit was wonderful to see in the group who were happy, co-operative and prepared to volunteer,” training officer Coral Allen said. “That’s what multicultural Australia is all about.”
