“Good progress” continues on Central Pier demolition
Development Victoria’s acting group head of precincts Ronan Mellan says it continues to make good progress on the removal of Central Pier from Victoria Harbour despite reports of delays during recent months.
While the removal of the heritage structure had motored along during August, some locals have queried why works had seemingly come to a standstill in recent weeks despite workers remaining on site.
Mr Mellan told Docklands News that while it has made good progress to date, DV had always maintained that its full removal would “take several years given the complexity of the project.”
“Works to remove the pier are progressing well with removal of Shed 9, as well as the concrete area on the south of Shed 14 on track.
Realignment of services along Harbour Esplanade, essential for the decommissioning process for the pier’s infrastructure, is also under way,” Mr Mellan said.
“The next phase of work is complex, given the structure of Central Pier, and requires careful planning before we start the more visible work to ensure the safety of workers and the public is prioritised.”
The removal of Central Pier from Victoria Harbour is a key step in the Victorian Government’s plans to revitalise the area and adjacent waterfront in the heart of Docklands.
Its removal requires highly technical and detailed engineering due to the state of the structure and its position in the harbour.
Development Victoria says it will continue to engage with key stakeholders in the area as it considers opportunities for the revitalisation of Central Pier and adjacent waterfront areas, including respecting the rich cultural heritage of Victoria Harbour. •
