Watergate evacuated

Watergate’s north tower was evacuated last month due to an apartment fire.

Watergate building manager Marshall Delves said the fire started in the early hours of October 16 and was caused by candles that had been left burning.

Mr Delves said the fire was put out quickly because the apartment residents were woken by a smoke alarm and knew where to find a fire extinguisher.

The fire sprinkler was also activated aand the fire brigade attended the building.

Mr Delves said all Watergate residents took part in a fire safety and evacuation induction when they moved into the building.

“The biggest problem that we have is, with the serviced apartments operating in the building, none of the short-term tenants have any induction to the building whatsoever,” Mr Delves said.

Mr Delves said there were concerns that people staying in short-term accommodation would not be aware of evacuation procedures in an emergency.
