THECHO!R unites Docklands at Norla Dome concert

THECHO!R, a vibrant choir based in Docklands, brought an evening of music and joy to the Norla Dome at the Mission to Seafarers on November 17, uniting the local community in song and celebration.

Founded in 2009, THECHO!R is Melbourne’s largest non-auditioned choir, welcoming singers over the age of 18 from any background and of every ability.

With a strong focus on community, THECHO!R creates a space for people to connect, share knowledge, and forge social bonds through their love of music.

The group’s members also support various charities by raising funds through their concerts and performances.

Their latest concert, Both Sides Now, featured an eclectic mix of songs by Joni Mitchell, Billy Joel, Karl Jenkins, and other timeless classics, alongside contemporary gems.

“THECHO!R exemplifies the most wonderful aspects of community music – a diverse group of people coming together each week to sing and share the joy of making music, and they love getting to share performances with audiences,” conductor Patrick Burns said.

Currently made up of around 40 choristers from all walks of life, THECHO!R’s members come together every Wednesday night at the Community Hub in Docklands to rehearse.

The group is inclusive, with participants of all ages and backgrounds, many of whom live or work in the Docklands precinct.

“I have been living and working in Docklands for over 15 years - singing for our local community is one of the highlights of my life,” choir member Dr Yvonne Zhou Grundy said.

THECHO!R has performed in a wide range of venues, including the Library at the Dock and Mission to Seafarers, as well as iconic locations such as the Melbourne Recital Centre, Sydney Opera House, and Melbourne Town Hall.

Their diverse repertoire spans everything from classical and contemporary music to jazz, swing, opera, musical theatre, rock, and even original works.

The group is always looking for new members and invites anyone interested to come along and experience the joy of singing at one of their weekly rehearsals.

THECHO!R is currently rehearsing on Wednesday evenings during school terms. For more information, visit playitforward.org.au/thechoir
