Mark Misic’s Rain Shadow comes to Magnet Galleries
Magnet Galleries at The District Docklands will present the exhibition, Rain Shadow, by artist Mark Misic, from October 23 to November 15.
The exhibition features gritty black-and-white photographs shot in nocturnal light, depicting both characters and places that are at once illusory and mundane. The works invite the viewer’s imagination and create an open-ended narrative.
Magnet exhibitions manager Susanne Silver said Mark Misic came to their attention as a very interesting photographer whose current works are specifically street photography in black and white, mostly taken at night.
Mr Misic is known for using experimental photographic techniques to inform his painting and drawing practices. Rain Shadow highlights this approach, situating photography within his broader artistic exploration.
Born in Melbourne, Mr Misic worked for more than 15 years in regional and remote communities across northern Australia, including the Northern Territory and Queensland. His practice spans painting, drawing, photography, and video, exploring strange couplings and flows between human physicality and the primordial landscape.
“The exhibition welcomes a variety of visitors, but this time is expected to appeal particularly to younger people, including students, who may be more interested in this kind of photography,” Ms Silver told Docklands News, adding that Magnet preferred documentary photographs taken in many forms.
From time to time, she said the gallery liked to feature exhibitions like Mr Misic’s, which may not fit neatly into the genre but were still absorbing, interesting, and thought-provoking.
The official opening of the exhibition will take place on Saturday, October 25, from 2pm to 4pm, and will be launched by Dr Sophie Knezic, associate lecturer in visual art at the Victorian College of the Arts.
Ms Silver said the gallery didn’t prescribe what visitors should take from an exhibition. Instead, they seek to learn from the audience’s responses after they have seen the works and create open-ended narratives.
The exhibition will be on view at Magnet Galleries, SC G19 Wharf St, The District Docklands, Victoria, open Tuesday to Saturday, from 10am to 5pm.
Rain Shadow will offer audiences a chance to experience photography that is both visually striking and conceptually engaging. •
