Love Our Streets 3008 returns for Docklands pop-up clean

Love Our Streets 3008 has returned to Docklands for a special pop-up clean on May 24, as 20 volunteers took to the sunny streets to make sure the suburb stays looking its best.

The event, held in collaboration with the Victorian Container Deposit Scheme, focused on the area surrounding NewQuay Central Park.

Simon Gaites, secretary of Beach Patrol Australia, which the Love Our Streets initiative is a branch of, said it was an “excellent” effort from all the volunteers, with “lots of students, locals and groups of friends getting out there and showing community pride.”

Over the course of just one hour, the team collected a remarkable 18 kilograms of litter. Common items included plastic bottle caps, drinking containers, and coffee cups. Hundreds of cigarette butts were also taken off the streets, along with seven abandoned shopping trolleys.

After the clean-up, the team made their way down to The District and visited the new Reverse Vending Machine, turning their collected trash into cash. Each 10-cent refund will go back into the initiative’s funds, which the group hopes will help them continue their work keeping streets litter free.

LOS3008 is part of a broader community-led initiative dedicated to keeping streets and beaches clean and welcoming, encouraging locals to take pride in their area. This pop-up was the first official event since the group’s launch in 2019, when around 50 residents came together for a “spring clean” of the suburb as part of World Clean Up Day.

Beach Patrol is “keen” to get the group activated for regular cleans, according to Mr Gaites. All equipment is there and ready to go; all that is missing are group leaders willing to organise a monthly, one-hour-long clean-up along the street of Docklands, helping bring Docklanders together and encouraging pride in their local area.
