12 days of Christmas

12 days of Christmas

Do something each day over 12 days that will make a difference to your health:

Try sticking to your workout routine and eat mindfully.

Plan your exercise a month in advance.

Start everyday with a 30-minute walk.

Incorporate movement into your Christmas shopping.

Host your Christmas get-together at the beach or a park.

Make the most of the sunshine and take your exercise outdoors.

Pace yourself at the office Christmas parties.

Avoid party nibbles and save your appetite for the main meal.

Colour your family feasts with five servings of veggies.

Bring along a fruit platter when asked to bring something.

Chose the foods you love and eat small portions.

Make a conscious effort to drink more water.

Ditch the Desk

With demanding work schedules and the challenges of juggling family life, it’s also often impossible to find the time to stick to exercise regimes, which is why Active Melbourne City Sports has developed the Ditch the Desk program with corporate workers in mind.

The Ditch the Desk walking and fitness program offers city workers a great activity to incorporate into their work schedule.

Since the launch in 2010, the program has seen great transformations of its participants.

Unlike most fitness programs, Ditch the Desk provides a non-threatening and enjoyable workout experience, showing participants that being active can be very simple.

Taking place in Docklands, customised group sessions are designed to suit groups of all levels. There is strong emphasis on those that have little or no experience in fitness, while still providing a challenge for those wanting to take their fitness further. Group fitness also proves an effective tool in motivating each other to “Ditch the Desk”.

Come and Try Sports Days

Last month saw the spring 2011 Corporate Challenge finals. Some 117 teams from more than 100 companies from the Melbourne CBD and Docklands corporate community participated in netball, basketball, lawn bowls and soccer throughout the spring season.

Active Melbourne City Sports will be hosting “Come and Try” Sports Day on January 30 and 31. Workplaces will have the opportunity to participate in a mini-Corporate Challenge competition over 30 minutes and experience the enjoyment of team sports.

Participating in team sports is an enjoyable way to get active. It’s motivational, interactive and an opportunity to build team camaraderie and enhance relationships with your colleagues and others in the community.

Workplaces are able to register a team for this complimentary “Come and Try” lunchtime competition by visiting http://www.melbournecitysports.ymca.org.au. Places are limited, so get in fast!
