Docklands Community Garden hosts planting event
The Docklands volunteer gardening community gathered on Saturday, May 10 to prepare all of the beds and then plant the autumn/winter crop.
This year we planted a wide range of brassicas, many leafy green vegetables, peas and beans, herbs and a wide variety of bulbs. Many of the seedlings planted were grown by stalwart volunteer Lisa in the garden’s greenhouse.
All of the seedlings we couldn’t grow ourselves and the bulbs were generously supplied to us by our friends at Bunnings Port Melbourne.
During the morning, we also officially unveiled a large, colourful mural designed by the young ladies from the Docklands Girl Guides. The theme of the mural focused on young people’s perception of the garden.
The mural has been attached to the garden’s rainwater tank. Our thanks are extended to all of the Girl Guides involved and, in particular, Maddie Saliba and her dad Sebastien for their efforts in driving this project from the initial concept to completion.
All of the volunteer gardeners who attended were treated to a delicious lunch and coffee throughout the morning provided by friends of the garden Rashmi and Brajesh from Be-Ras Creatives Art Café who are located right next to the garden.
Long-time supporters of the garden Woolworths in Merchant St kindly donated a gift voucher, which was used to provide hydration for the volunteers during the event.
All Docklands residents who are interested in gardening are welcome to volunteer and we encourage you to text Greg on 0408 818 980 with your contact details and an introductory tour of the garden will be arranged for you. •
