Docklands’ baby zebra nameless no more

For the past couple of months, all but one of Yarra’s Edge’s 20 baby animal statues had been named, and now after careful consideration the lone Grevy’s zebra is finally joining the pack with the name Clyde. 

The Wild About Babies sculptures have been situated in Docklands since mid-year and are the result of a partnership between Yarra’s Edge developer Mirvac and internationally renowned artists, Gillie and Marc.

While a fascinating and realistic exhibit, its main priority has been to build awareness, educate visitors about the threats to our most vulnerable species, and raise money for the World Wide Fund For Nature Australia (WWF-Australia).  

Following the official naming of the other animals after a community-wide competition in September, Mirvac turned to students at Clyde Grammar school, hopeful that they could come up with a perfectly fitting name. 

And according to Clyde Grammar principal Leanne Evans, the opportunity came at just the right time. 

“Our Year 2 students have been learning about animals and discovering new species this year, and what a wonderful way to wrap up the curriculum by visiting Mirvac’s Wild About Babies exhibit,” Ms Evans said. 

“We are focused on creating a rich, engaging learning experience and our students [were] so excited for this excursion to the exhibit to discover the importance of animal conservation and protecting our wildlife and of course, to see Clyde the zebra named after our school, Clyde Grammar.”

School kids involved in the naming of the loveable zebra visited the interactive exhibition on Tuesday, November 29, to not only officially meet the animal they played a part in naming, but to also learn more about the importance of the animals situated along the water’s edge. 

Clyde Grammar is a newly established school and an independent CSV Limited school within Mirvac’s Smiths Lane community in Clyde North, and upon completion it will allow for the full enrolment of 1200 Prep to Year 12 students. 

CSV Limited is the governing body for three low-fee independent schools, and alongside Clyde Grammar, Balcombe Grammar in Mount Martha and Casey Grammar in Cranbourne East are also included. •
