Connect with craft at The Cauldron
If you haven’t already discovered our beautiful little shop space full of colour and wonderful crafty goodness, the next time you are in The District do swing by The Cauldron – craft connect, Shop 11, Wharf St.
We are a community connection program, created via the Docklands Stakeholder Group and supported by the City of Melbourne.
The aim of the program is to connect people who live and work in Docklands using crafting as the conduit.
We are currently holding “social crafting” sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 5pm to 7pm, though it is always best to check for any updates via our social media sites or email.
What is social crafting? Social crafting has many names, historically it would have been similar to a “sewing circle”. More current terms are “crafternoons”, “sip and stitch”, and “makers sessions”.
Essentially, we create a space where anyone who handcrafts, knits, crochets, hand stitches, draws, writes poetry, etc. can turn up with their own projects and meet others in the community who also ply their craft, and then work in a supportive, inclusive, encouraging group environment.
We are very excited to announce that the program is now hosting craft classes. Everything from paper craft such as making your own Christmas cards, wrap and tags, and basic hand stitching to create your own felt and fabric decorations, to learning how to knit and exploring the intricate craft skill of tatting.
More classes are being added weekly. For more information you can see all available classes on the Try Booking site by searching Docklands on www.trybooking.com
If you are an experience crafter yourself and would like to offer classes in our space we’d love to hear from you too. Our aim is to offer craft skills and projects to the community with a percentage of class fees being directed back into the program so we can continue our social and charity crafting sessions for all.
For those who enjoy crafting for charity we have a healthy supply of wool and knitting needles, which can be borrowed, to knit and crochet items that we donate the KOGO. KOGO is a Melbourne based charity group that gives handmade knitted and crocheted items to vulnerable people experiencing hardship in our Australian community.
Being handmade, donations like scarves, blankets, and beanies not only provide physical comfort and warmth but also add an emotional boost for those receiving items knowing they have been crafted by a community that cares.
If you have knitted donations, you can drop them at the shop on social crafting nights or contact us via email.
More on KOGO can be found here: www.kogo.org.au/welcome
If you’d like to find out more about our community crafting program, we are having an open night on Wednesday November 6 from 4pm to 7pm, with a guest speaker from KOGO explaining more about their mission. We hope to meet plenty of new community members and it’s the perfect way to drop by meet the team and explore our space. •
