Choir of Hard Knocks celebrates 19 years
The Choir of Hard Knocks began rehearsing in 2006 and, since then, has made an indelible mark on Australia – giving people from all backgrounds and experiences the opportunity to sing to audiences across the country.
The choir, which was established to support people experiencing homelessness, social injustice, or social disconnection, will celebrate its 19th lap around the sun this September.
It has announced its Dare to Dream special, to be performed on September 13 at The Library at The Dock in Docklands.
Co-artistic director Adam Przewlocki – who has led the choir for six years alongside Danielle Matthews – said the event marked an important milestone as the choir nears two decades of singing across the nation.
Mr Przewlocki has been involved with the choir since 2008 but became co-artistic director when founder Dr Jonathon Welch AM retired in 2019.
He was drawn to the choir for its ethos and purpose, which differed from other community choirs he had worked with.
“This role has definitely changed me,” he said. “It’s heightened my awareness of the invisible struggles so many people face – especially mental illness, which you often can’t see at all.”
“Jonathon established something very special with the choir. He put so much passion into it, and the TV coverage really helped it become a national story.”
This upcoming celebration is a prelude to next year’s 20th anniversary, which the choir hopes to celebrate at Town Hall.
The songs, chosen collaboratively by choir members and artistic directors, will include a smorgasbord of Aussie pop and rock.
“Many of the songs were chosen by choir members themselves through our suggestion box,” Mr Przewlocki said.
One of the big drawcards of being in the choir, according to Mr Przewlocki, is its egalitarian nature.
“Group singing is a level playing field,” he said. “No matter your age, background or ability, almost anyone can join in. And from a health perspective – deep breathing, resonance, oxygenation – it’s incredibly beneficial, both emotionally and physically.”
At the 19-year anniversary, The Choir of Hard Knocks will be joined by internationally acclaimed contralto Liane Keegan and THECHO!R, led by Patrick Burns.
“I’d encourage everyone to come along on September 13. You’ll witness some passionate, committed singing from some truly extraordinary people,” Mr Przewlocki said. •
