You’ve probably seen them outside ALF headquarters in Harbour Esplanade – 12 green mounds covered with fake grass.

But what are they?  They look like graves. Surely they don’t represent the death of Victorian football and 12 teams of the former VFL?

And what is the significance of the three white stripes across the top of each?  And what about the sad attempt to grow a gum tree from each mound?

The skateboarders don’t have any joy on the fake grass.  The gum trees like it even less.  But the BMX riders seem to enjoy the challenge of jumping between them.

Is it a pagan altar of some type?  A mini (very) Stonehenge?  A site for Mayan ritual or blood sacrifice?

The answer is none of the above.  The answer is that the mounds are supposed to represent footballs.  What the?
