Women’s Ice team eyes the grand final

Docklands’ Medibank Icehouse will host the Women’s Hockey League grand final.

On Sunday, February 27, the president of Melbourne Ice, Andrew Lamrock, said its women’s team has a good chance of taking the title.

Mr Lamrock said the Melbourne Ice Women’s (MIW) had gone from strength to strength and every player had been constantly improving and, as a result, the team had a serious chance of securing the championship.

“There is absolutely no question that MIW are focused and determined to leave nothing on the ice and secure their first championship victory in front of the home crowd at the Medibank Icehouse,” Mr Lamrock said.

Earlier in the year two wins against the Adelaide Assassins, which are the persistent favourites and league leaders, proved that MIW were strong contenders to take out the grand final.

“Not content with just winning, the MIW skated to 5-0 and 4-1 victories and gave the Assassins a real hockey lesson,” he said.

Mr Lamrock said the recently-named Australian Women’s team also included four MIW players, which was a testament to the constant development, improvement and dedication the team had.

The semi-finals of the Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League will be played on February 26, with the grand final to follow on February 27.

The Melbourne Ice male team won last year’s Goodall Cup.
