The Mission to Seafarers Victoria (MtSV) has officially announced the return of its annual Maritime Art Prize and Exhibition, with entries now open for artists’ submissions.

This year’s return theme is “The Relationship of Humanity to the Sea” and, following last year’s impressive line-up, exhibition organisers have promised that this year will be a celebration of artistic excellence and maritime heritage.

Artists from all backgrounds and of all levels of experience can submit their entries up until September 8, and go into the running to win a share of the $25,000 prize pool.

Entries will be awarded based on four categories: $15,000 for the prestigious Maritime Art award; $5000 for Best in Traditional Maritime Art award; $2000 for Runner-Up award; $1000 for the Emerging Artist award; and $2000 for the People’s Choice award, determined by the public.

Selecting the winning artists will be a distinguished panel of judges, including Geelong Gallery director and CEO Jason Smith, arts industry leader Jane Scott, and renowned author and artistic director at Heide Museum of Modern Art Lesley Harding.

The Maritime Art Prize and Exhibition will run from October 20 to 26, during which the public is invited to marvel at the remarkable works displayed, and possibly find a piece to purchase and make their own.

Visit the exhibition at The Mission to Seafarers at 717 Flinders St, Docklands. •
