More affordable housing

Docklands is to get a third affordable housing project, with the State and Federal Governments announcing 522 apartments at Harbour Town.

The apartments are to be built in four separate towers in “gaps” on the edge of the shopping centre in both Pearl River Rd and Waterfront Way.

The 522 studio, one- and two-bedroom, affordable rental homes are being delivered through the National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS).

The Docklands project was announced on November 2 by both Federal Minister Tony Burke and the State Minister for Housing, Richard Wynne.

ING refused to comment when questioned by the Docklands News.

The Merchant was opened in Victoria Harbour last December with 57 “affordable” apartments.  Docklands’ second project is MAB’s The Mariner, on the corner of Docklands Drive and Pearl River Rd, where the State and Federal Governments are providing most of the funding for 85 rentals.

There are a further 28 apartments which will be sold privately in the MAB-developed complex.

Housing Choices Australia contributed $8.4 million towards The Mariner and will manage the affordable housing component.

The Merchant has 57 apartments “affordable” apartment over three floors and is managed by Housing Choices Australia.  It cost $18.7 million to build and is geared towards low to medium income earners.
