Call for more security at station

The Transport Users Association has called for more security and policing at Southern Cross Station following a brawl after the EJ Whitten Legends game on July 6.
The association’s president, Daniel Bowen, said big events needed to have enough staff and police to discourage such a fight from starting and to intervene quickly if it does.
The brawl is understood to have involved about 15 people and broke out on platform 11 of Southern Cross Station at 10.10pm on Tuesday, July 6.
“Obviously the station is staffed fulltime, but numbers of staff need to be looked at after these types of events to ensure the crowd is handled well and everybody is safe,” Mr Bowen said.
A police spokeswoman said police were in the vicinity of the station and arrived shortly after the fight started.
She said no arrests were made and no one was seriously injured.
“It’s disappointing that police haven’t been able to act and, while we can be thankful that apparently nobody was seriously injured, it is of great concern that a fight like this can break out on a crowded platform,” Mr Bowen said.
It is understood that the station supplied CCT footage to police.
Metro spokesperson Chris Whitefield said the 10.16pm Frankston-bound train was delayed by about nine minutes and other trains were diverted due to the incident.
Docklands Community Association president, Roger Gardner, said he couldn’t comment on the adequacy of security at Southern Cross Station as he doesn’t use the use the train much, especially not at night, but believes that security in Docklands is working well.
Southern Cross Station Pty Ltd declined to comment on the incident.
