Work starts to transform pedestrian link

The temporary walkway on Flinders St near the new Melbourne Quarter precinct closed early last month while construction of an upgraded pedestrian link between Docklands and the CBD takes place.

The new-look walkway will run underneath the train overpass along Flinders St between Lendlease’s Melbourne Quarter development and Spencer St and transform what has been a largely dormant part of Docklands for many years.

The walkway will be fitted with bluestone paving to match the traditional aesthetic of the city and will also feature two open area grassed embankments and native landscaping.

Development Victoria’s group head of precincts Geoff Ward said that the walkway would make Docklands safer and more accessible to pedestrians.

“This pedestrian walkway will further open up access between Docklands and the CBD. It will be easier, safer, and more accessible and it will transform this part of the city,” he said.

During construction, pedestrians will be required to cross to the southern side of Flinders St and use the path to and from the Spencer Street intersection until the new walkway is completed in early 2021.
