Happy new year, Docklands

Happy new year, Docklands

We hope everyone had a wonderful festive season and had a great time ringing in the New Year with Docklands’ fabulous fireworks show.

Community3008 inc. is an incorporated community group for all residents of Docklands as well as small businesses operating in Docklands. It is supported by the City of Melbourne and was initiated by the Docklands Stakeholder Group.

Our admin had a break from community work through December and January but are now ready to jump back in, sourcing guest speakers for meetings and working on topics important to our members.

If you have ideas on how the community group can enhance our suburb or wish to hear about specific developments, or even have concerns as a resident, then feel free to join up and contribute to community where you live.

Docklands is an unusual suburb in that it is overseen by The Docklands Act 1991 and still partially built with an estimated 40 per cent still to come.

This provides both hindrances but also opportunity, as we can work with developers, the City of Melbourne and Development Victoria to have a say in what our suburb needs in terms of liveability and infrastructure moving forward.

Community3008 inc. aims to build on our already great relationships with stakeholders in Docklands, as well as foster new partnerships moving forward.

2024 saw a lot of community progress in Docklands, resulting from the Docklands Stakeholder Group, from craft groups to youth programs, to our very own Farmer’s Market and our newly incorporated member-based community group.

It has been great to see what can be achieved when residents invest their time and ideas with appropriate funding (granted by the City of Melbourne). We’d love to keep the momentum going and encourage anyone with a great community idea to join up and be part of the future of Docklands.

In other community news, we have the Docklands Farmer’s Market, proudly supported by the Docklands Chamber of Commerce, City of Melbourne, MAB Corporation and the Victorian Farmers’ Market Association.

The market will continue to be held on the first Sunday of each month along NewQuay Promenade. The next market will be February 2, 8am to 12.30pm. Apart from fabulous farm fresh products and produce there will also be kids roller-skating from 10am to 12pm and kids face painting from 10am to 12pm.

The Farmers’ Market also has provisions for a “community tent” so if your community group in Docklands would like a community table you can contact Docklands Chamber of Commerce for more details:

Don’t forget to bring your trolley and esky to make the most of our fabulous new market in Docklands.

Docklands Mah-jong Club will be up and running again in 2025 with its first gathering for the year to be held on February 11 from 6pm at Steakhouse66 in NewQuay or arrive a little early to grab some dinner and support a local business supporting community engagement.

Whether you are a seasoned player or a newbie all are welcome and all levels can be accommodated. Meetings are usually fortnightly but it’s always best to check updates on the club’s social media.

Docklands community clean-up crew

Are you interested in helping keep our beautiful suburb sparkling?

There is scope to re-establish a volunteer cleaning group in Docklands, similar to the “Love Our Streets 3008” program from previous years.

At this stage the idea is just forming but to be a success volunteers are required, if you would like to register your interest you can do so via Community3008 inc. at
