Tram accident

Morning peak-hour trams along LaTrobe St were disrupted on June 25 when a driver made a U-turn across the tracks without warning and collided with a tram.

The driver of the car was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital for treatment, and the driver’s-side of the car was significantly damaged in the collision.

The driver and passengers on the route 86 tram did not report any injuries, and were advised of alternative travel options.

The City Circle and route 86 trams temporarily terminated at LaTrobe St until the scene was cleared. Normal tram services resumed at 9.20am.

Yarra Trams Spokesperson Melanie Lim said this incident illustrated the need for greater awareness among the general public when travelling around trams.

“Our message to motorists is to stay clear of the yellow line and always check for trams before turning,” Ms Lim said. “Right-hand turns or U-turns without warning can give no time for a tram to stop.”
