New garden fires up interest

Locals descended on the new Docklands Community Garden on May 24 for the first organised activity.

In the past month a community garden interest group has already met several times at The Hub.  However, and somewhat fittingly since the Garden is seen by the community as a public meeting place, this was the first time a meeting had been held in the garden.

With the fire pit alight, cooking aromas wafting from the barbecue and community members enjoying neighbourly company, the garden lived up to its promise as a community meeting space.

Those present had the opportunity to view the new gardening equipment and they participated in discussions about the future agenda for the garden.  In addition, they were given the opportunity to plant some seeds to nurture at home for future planting in the garden.

Equipment acquired by the garden includes several portable caddies, each containing a set of hand tools.  Anyone who wishes to do a bit of local gardening can borrow these gardening kits from the Docklands Hub.

The Hub’s opening hours are 8.30am - 5.00pm.  The tool kits can be borrowed for the day or overnight upon production of ID.  The phone number for The Hub is 8622 4822.

The next organised activity in the Docklands community garden will be a herb-planting day which will occur on June 3.  Bring a picnic lunch along to the garden between 11am and 2.30pm to join other Docklanders for some “hands on” gardening to plant out several of the garden beds as a local herb garden.

There will also be a further meeting of the Community Gardening Group on Wednesday, June 6 at 7pm at The Hub.

The garden will be officially launched in July with details to be announced soon. To register for more information email [email protected]
