Police have charged a 23-year-old Brooklyn man over an alleged sexual assault at NewQuay on Sunday, May 9.

Police allege that Timothy Richards followed a woman into the Conder apartment building at about 8.30am.

It is alleged Richards then caught the lift with her, where he indecently and physically assaulted her.  The victim managed to escape when the lift doors opened on an apartment floor.

It is alleged Richards then caught the lift to the ground floor and left the building. He was arrested by a short time later.

A spokesperson for Police Media confirmed that the victim was not known to the offender.

The accused has been charged with assault with intent to rape and false imprisonment and has been remanded in custody.

He is due to appear in Melbourne  Magistrates Court on August 6 for a committal mention.
