Docklanders give to cancer charity

The Docklands community gave generously to last month’s “Biggest Morning Tea” Cancer Council fundraiser.

Two events were held on Thursday, May 27 – one at Victoria Point in the morning and an afternoon event at Yarra’s Edge.

Both events exceeded expectations, with more than $4000 being raised for the Cancer Council of Australia.

At Victoria Point, about 100 people attended the morning tea at Lamore restaurant and $650 was raised.

Victoria Point Owners Corporation spokesperson Paige Jay said:  “It was really lovely to chat with all those who attended and everyone was extremely generous with their donations. It was a great opportunity to meet more Docklands residents and workers.”

At Yarra’s Edge, more than 80 people raised $3500 through donation, entry fees, raffles and silent auctions.

Organiser Rhonda Howard said: “The diversity of donations for our silent auction, door prizes and raffle was truly amazing. Everybody had an enormous amount of fun, and that is the whole idea in developing a real ‘community’ feel within our residential precinct.”

Ms Howard said a Yarra’s Edge “coffee and chat” social group was behind the event.

“A number of our community have been affected by cancer, and a group of five ladies (Joy Trimble, Kaye Lane, Dawn Copperwaite, Tanja Karavesov and Rhonda Taylor) decided that a fundraiser for the Biggest Morning Tea would be an appropriate cause to support,” she said.

“When we registered with the Cancer Council, we were asked to estimate how much we would raise, and we thought a modest amount of $100 would be nice. We thought that, if we got 10 - 20 people to come, that would be a realistic achievement.”

“Special thanks go to all who contributed to a great day, and our husbands for putting up with many late nights and empty wine bottles!” she said.
