Facebook or Meowbook?

He may be shy to meet in person, but give him a laptop and he transforms into one social and popular cat …

Meet Rusty, the social-networking, Vegemite-loving, spoiled tabby ragdoll cat from Docklands who resides in the Arkley building with his owner Iris.

With his own room, bathroom and chair, it may not come as a surprise to know that this spoilt cat also has his own Facebook page.

What was started as a social experiment by Iris has since grown into a hobby with a continual flow of updates and a rapidly increasing rate of popularity which has even seen Docklands Chamber of Commerce vice-president, Elena Tsapatolis “Facebook befriend” him.

“I was having a conversation with my sister about the whole Facebook phenomenon and I said I would put Rusty up and see how many people befriend him,” Iris said.

“I only sent out five friend requests and he now has more than 60 friends,” Iris said.

Rusty is also proud to be an Aussie cat so much so that he has even acquired a taste for our national cuisine … Vegemite.

Rusty’s obsession with Vegemite is more than most Australians. Rusty doesn’t just go crazy about the taste, but he also loves the smell.

“On a still night, or if the wind is going in the right direction, we actually get the smell of Vegemite from the Kraft factory and Rusty will sit on the balcony just sniffing away,” Iris said.

With an exciting view over Docklands and the Kraft factory just across the water, this cat loves Docklands and after three years of residing in the suburb, he is definitely here to stay.
