Go with the flow at the Mission

Docklanders have the soothing sounds of old-school jazz in our only old-school venue for the next three Friday nights.

John Scurry returns to the Mission to Seafarers at 717 Flinders St with a program called “Jazz on a Summer’s Eve”.

John and company did a series of shows last summer in the open-air courtyard of the heritage-listed, Spanish mission-style complex.

The Docklanders who took advantage of the opportunity were greatly rewarded with fine musicianship, laid-back rhythms and wonderful ambience.

The $10 entry fee and drinks from the bar also means that you can expect to come home with plenty of folding stuff in your wallet.

This season John is calling his outfit “reverse swing” – perhaps in reference to the current Ashes tests.

Here’s an extract from our review from last February: “The band is playing again and there are about 50 people enjoying the jazz. The ambience of the evening is wonderful.”

“The band is playing at just the correct volume so you can have a conversation and hear what each other is saying. Before we know it the band announces their last song. We all agree the evening has gone too quickly.”

The band starts at 5pm and plays until 8pm.

Once you find yourself on north wharf relatively early on a balmy Friday night, why not launch into an exploration up river?  Have you explored the new venues at the World Trade Centre?

Or cross over Seafarers Bridge and explore Southbank or beyond.

In other nightlife news, Dance 101 has moved its 5pm Sunday afternoon free salsa dancing to Curves Bar and Restaurant.

It’s nights like these that make it so worthwhile living in Docklands and in easy strolling distance of the best that the world has to offer right here in Melbourne.
