DODO encouraged by Hastings decision

Defend Our Docklands Or … (DODO) convenor Michael Lindell believes that the State Government’s decision to fast-track the Port of Hastings is good for Docklands.

DODO has been campaigning against a Port of Melbourne Corporation proposal to build a low rail bridge in front of the Bolte Bridge to connect its Webb Dock facility to its freight handling centre at Dynon.

The bridge plan is part of a plan to develop Webb Dock in future decades.  But Mr Lindell says the early development of Hastings may mean this does not happen.

“What’s even more significant is the Government has severed the Port of Melbourne’s control over Hastings,” he said.

“Being freed from Port of Melbourne control gives Hastings the ability to compete with Melbourne in the market place.”

“You’ve got to give credit to Minister Napthine for following through on his election promise,” Mr Lindell said.

In announcing his decision on May 31, Port Minister Denis Napthine said: “Hastings is already an operating port and is well-placed to be Victoria’s second container port, with its existing deep water access and extensive  supply of port-zoned land.

“The new port will also provide logistics benefits by delivering freight  with good access to major customers in Melbourne’s south-east,” Dr  Napthine said.
