Wharf Street Open Night

The Docklands Art Collective is hosting the Wharf Street Open Night. Various groups will throw open their doors and invite the public to several new exhibitions. Participating are: The Artist’s Guild, At Current Gallery, Dodgy Paper, Crowther Contemporary, Tiger in the Jungle and The Blender Project Space. See specifics under the artist’s info.

The Artist’s Guild:

Oblique - Exhibition Opening

Opening night Friday, April 6, 6-9pm

A group show of five women artists responding to the word “oblique”, meaning not expressed or done in a direct way, through the medium of paint. The artists Alysa McHugh, Chantel Camilleri, Cy O’Neill, Julie Vinci and Nicole Thibault met while studying Visual Art in 2017, coming from backgrounds in different mediums such as painting, music, textiles, photography, video, drawing and print. Realising they shared similar ideas themes and in their work, the artists have created new work for this exhibition to explore personal responses to the set of common parameters as outlined above.

On the Hearth: Petra Kleinherne – Exhibition opening

Opening night Friday, April 6, 6-9pm

Petra uses the model as a starting point. Sometimes she sketches the figure roughly with charcoal or pencil and then goes off with the oil paint. Likeness is not the goal but rather the feeling that is evoked by the presence of the model, the viscosity of the oil paint and colour. The materiality of the paint takes over and the result is dictated by the painting itself. Each work happens over three hours and Petra tries to load the paint as much as possible to get a thick texture.

DIY abstract tote bag workshop

Saturday April 7 and 14, 12pm 

$30 – tote included!

Inspired by Oblique, this workshop allows you to create your own slogan or abstract design to take home on a tote bag.

All materials will be provided and the artists will be on hand to guide you through it.

You can also make your design on a T-shirt (extra cost) or make a free poster!

Children under 12 are free (but does not include tote).

The Artists Guild, Tree Paper Comics and At Current Gallery organise a weekly life drawing class in Docklands.  Held in the Tree Paper comic studio on Wharf St, it is an unguided class and a safe place for people of all levels to further develop their skills. All materials are provided.

The Australian Cartoon Museum

Head High Tackle – Paul Harvey exhibition

Wednesdays – Sundays, 11am to 4pm

The Australian Cartoon Museum has recently opened an exhibition of original caricatures of footballers by Paul Harvey for the beginning of the football season. Paul Harvey will be at the museum most Sundays between 12pm and 2pm for signing postcards, limited edition prints and, if you’re lucky, a caricature of yourself!
