Urban legends: Fact or fable?
City on a Hill is in the midst of a provocative new teaching series called Urban Legends.
What is an urban legend? I hear you ask. An Urban Legend is “a story of obscure origin with little or no supporting evidence, that spreads spontaneously in varying forms”.
For example, it’s believed that if a baby is born in flight, Qantas will give the child free air travel for the rest of his or her life. And did you know that the reason Kentucky Fried Chicken changed its name to KFC was because they don’t actually serve chicken but, in fact, rabbit? And apparently the children’s song “Sing a Song of Sixpence” was actually a coded message to recruit pirates!
Our city is full of Urban Legends – especially when it comes to God, spirituality and the church. Throughout the month of December we will be looking at some of the popular Urban Legends. For example: “God is a kill joy”, “Christians do more harm than good”, and “Heaven will be boring”. We will be asking: Are they fact or fable?
City on a Hill run services every Sunday at 10.30am and 6pm at James Squire Brewhouse, Waterfront City. You can also find out more and hear some of the messages free online at cityonahill.com.au.
If you have heard an urban legend and are not sure whether its fact or fable, feel free to email us at (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
Guy Mason is one of the pastors at City on a Hill – a church committed to making a difference for the Glory of God.
