Guy Mason April 2010

It seems a little strange that people all around the world refer to the bloody and brutal execution of Jesus as “good”. The hot cross buns are nice, and who can’t deny a public holiday – but to call it “Good Friday” seems somewhat inappropriate and insensitive.
Death never appears good. Death is about loss. Death is about regret. Death is about sorrow. Death is about never seeing those we love again. Death is about tears and missed opportunities. Death is final.
So why call the death of the world’s most famous and influential man good?
The death of Jesus was horrendous. He was tortured, spat on, left naked to die on a Roman cross. Why then continue to hold the cross, the symbol of execution, as the symbol of the Christian faith?
It’s even more remarkable to know that this day has always been considered “good”. In fact, Jesus’ friends, family and followers referred to his death as the “gospel” – a word which literally means “good news”. Good news for our world, good news for Melbourne, good news for Docklands and good news for you and me.
This “Good Friday” we will be taking an opportunity to consider the death of Christ and, in the midst of the blood and horror, explore the goodness of God.
This special service will take place at 10am (James Squire Brewhouse, Waterfront City). Our Easter Sunday services will be at 10.30am and 6pm at the same venue.
Whether you’re a seeker, a sceptic or a card-carrying Christian, it would be great to have you with us over the Easter weekend and see how one man changed the course of human history.

Good Friday did bring myself and my son to City On a Hill for the Church service and sermon.
The Holy Mass at City On A Hill is the most solemn act of the Worship of God
Hot Cross buns have long been a symbol of Good Friday it is to signify the crucifixion.
Thank-you Revd Guy, Singers and Volunteers for an excellent Easter Service
