Good News Bill - July 2011

28 Jun 2011

Good News for Docklanders!

Isn’t Docklands just a great place to be?

A hidden gem some might say. Been over to Harbour Town lately? There are great shops there and plenty of great deals to be had. Do yourself a favour, jump on the Docklands Monorail and head on over!

Wait – the Docklands Monorail is not yet a reality. Look … jump on a tram for the time being and keep focussed on that monorail. What a great attraction that would be for Docklands and what a great way to get about and see the great things Docklands has to offer. You reckon that wouldn’t make life easier to see and feel the Docklands’ experience?

Who has been to Yarra’s Edge lately? Great restaurants and cafes with a great waterside feel. If that monorail was a reality you could jump on that and silently skim across the Yarra and, in no time at all,  you would arrive at Yarra’s Edge.

Never mind. Right now you can get there by taking a walk over the Webb Bridge footbridge near the ANZ building. What do you mean you didn’t know it was there? I challenge you to go take a look!

Where is all the green space in Docklands? There is a good supply in Victoria Harbour nestled in between Bourke St and Harbour Esplanade. But great news! More green space is spreading in Docklands with MAB announcing the near completion of the Quay Park development. The park incorporates many water-sensitive urban design initiatives such as rain garden filtration and a 150,000-litre rain store located underground.   It captures and reuses the rain water so it can be irrigated year-round. Time to head off  to Waterfront City and on towards the Bolte Bridge. Discover for yourself the greening of Docklands.

On the far extremes of Docklands is South Wharf and the World Trade Centre – North Wharf. What a great place to stroll around on a nice day. Discover the attractions that are in that vicinity. There’s shopping, dining, Polly Woodside, the Exhibition Centre and great walks with a great river outlook. Watch out for the new dining experience that will shortly open up next to Polly.

If you are adventurous, then grab yourself a bike helmet ($5 for goodness sake at your local convenience store) and find out how you can use the City of Melbourne’s fleet of blue bikes that are everywhere in Docklands. This has just got to be a good way to get around. Grab a couple of mates and go discover Docklands. You will be surprised.

July is a fantastic month to be in Docklands. Every Friday night in July from 7pm there are fabulous fireworks and sound spectaculars to warm your winter night. What more excuse do you need to visit Docklands? Why not make an evening of it and enjoy the experience.

The Docklands Sunday Market has a new winter location at the tent in Docklands Drive, opposite Harbour Town.  It is open from 10am to 5pm so why not spend an hour or two and then head off for lunch
or dinner?

July is Discover Docklands month – I have given you some handy hints so go out and explore – and let me know when you discover something I can report in August!   – (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

I have to agree. Docklands is a great place to be. May I suggest that using your column lets get groups of people to meet at a nominated location for a Docklands Moomba. Say one day - gather at an attraction in Harbour Town, another day lets meet at a restaurant in NewQuay to enjoy a “special” - then another day lets grab a ferry and go over to North Wharf for a beer….. can someone organise things like that for us?

Love the idea of a monorail. Who do we have to influence to make it happen?

  • Rose M at 11:16am on 14/07/11

I must disagree. While I think the concept of a monorail to move people around the place is useful, they are UGLY.  Have you seen the Sydney one?  Horrible.  The poles that hold it up look shocking, the trip on the monorail is expensive and still not many people use it. Yuck.  Pls think of something else or you’ll end up spoiling what is a very beautiful place in the making - Docklands.

    Docklands needs a transport LOOP.

I suppose hooking up with the Bolte Bridge and swooping around Melbourne’s Waterfront Edge would be good - and linking in with Spencer Street and other major Docklands Hubs would be ideal!

Swift, silent, convenient, clean energy, easy access, local attraction! serene!

I agree with Rose - it ought not be UGLY. Consider what we have already - Trams and Rail Crossings - those overhead wires everywhere, and the poles that hold them up! The congestion! Just awful!

Consider Bridges, Tunnels and Aquaducts. Do they look as bad? And haven’t they served an important purpose throughout the world and history?
